A bird dropping on the wall is not always a bird dropping. In this case, it was the pupae of the Common Dotted Border butterfly. When the butterfly emerges, gingerly opening its wings while the Rooiels winds gust round Klein-Hangklip. The butterflies lay their eggs on the branch of the Cape sumach (wildepruim) and when the very active larvae hatch after about 7 days, they immediately feed on the host plant. What a lovely sight it is when one sees a kaleidoscope of butterflies all over Rooiels showing off their wings of white, yellow and orange.
