Porcupine Potato (Eng), Ystervarkpatat, Dawidjieswortel (Afr.)
Tuber used as cleansing emetic and laxative. Infusion mixed with honey for hemorrhoids. Infusions for diabetes and cancer and low doses for diarrhea. Baked tuber as contraceptive, may cause abortivatient action. Colonists used infusion in brandy as purgative.
Woody stemmed, tuberous climber with curling tendrils, up to 2m; angled stems. Leaves heart-shaped, shiny-green with prominent veins; small flowers are pale yellow, cup-shaped, male flowers in a cluster and female flowers singular on the stem; bright orange fruit. Tubers eaten by porcupines.
