Dilatris pillansii
Information
Shortmale Redroot, Bloodroot. Afr. Rooiwortel
DILATRIS PILLANSII
🌸 Description
A striking perennial with mauve to pink‑purple flowers held in dense,
velvety clusters. The petals have a soft sheen that makes the flowerheads
particularly eye‑catching in the veld.
🔥 Ecology
A classic fynbos plant that flowers more abundantly after fire. Blooming
season runs from August to January. After seed release, the dry, decorative
seedheads remain on the stems, adding beauty to the plant well into summer.
🌱 Growth Form
Clump‑forming herb with narrow, upright leaves. The rhizome
is a vivid bright red, the feature that gives the species its Afrikaans name
Rooiwortel (“Bloodroot”).
📍 Habitat
Mountain fynbos on sandstone slopes.
