Information

URSINIA PALEACEA
Common names: Mountain Marigold (Eng.); Geelmagriet,
Bergmagriet (Afr.)
A SPLASH OF YELLOW
Ursinia paleacea, the Mountain Marigold, flowers
amongst the fynbos from early spring to midsummer.
It occurs from the Cape Peninsula eastwards through the
Garden Route, and we have certainly photographed these cheerful yellow flowers
from Rooiels to Kleinmond.
ALWAYS BUSY
There always seems to be something visiting a Mountain
Marigold. Monkey beetles, flies, bees and wasps can be seen on the flowers —
and sometimes a pretty yellow spider is waiting there too.
Some of these insect visitors play a role in pollination.
From around October, the seeds begin to ripen. Each has a
little parachute of papery scales that helps the wind carry it away from the
parent plant.
Conservation status: Least Concern.
