Information
Wandering Jew, African Yellow Dayflower(Eng); dwalende jood, geel eendagsblom (Afr.). This pretty plant grows in well in a wet sandy soils or during good rainfall seasons. The major pollinators of this plant are insects, mainly ants. In traditional medicine, a decoction of the roots is used to treat venereal diseases and as a medicine for menstrual period pains. The ash can be applied to the loins for sterility, or used as a fertilizer.
Commelina africana is a spreading, perennial herb up to 0.5 m high with pretty yellow flowers. Widespread in Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Pennisula, in forests, savanna and grassland. Very common in southern Africa. Status Least Concern.
