Crassula coccinea
Information
Red crassula, Red Stonecrop, Klipblom (Afr.)
Nothing can prepare one for the shocking beauty of
a Red Crassula flowering against a grey rock in the Rooiels Mountains.
We had hiked past this specific spot countless
times without noticing it, until one day, we were stunned by the brilliant red
flowers in the distance.
The team of observers scrambled for the best
position to take photographs, with some clinging precariously to a rock near a
precipice.
Not surprisingly, the Red Crassula is pollinated by
the Table Mountain Beauty butterfly, which has a penchant for red flowers
(including the Red Disa).
You will find the Red Crassula in rock crevices and
on ledges on the coastal mountain slopes. We have also found some on the
smallholding road. As is often the case in nature, being at the right place at
the right time makes all the difference. In Rooiels we have observed them from August to January.
