GLADIOLUS BLOMMESTEINII

INTRODUCTION

Gladiolus blommesteinii is not often found in the Rooiels area, so we were very excited to come across it. It can easily be confused with the similar-looking Gladiolus hirsutus, making careful identification important.

DISTRIBUTION & HABITAT

Gladiolus blommesteinii occurs mainly in the Overberg region, from the Hottentots Holland Mountains towards Riviersonderend.

It grows in sandstone-derived soils on mountain slopes, where it forms part of the rich fynbos vegetation.

Like so many fynbos plants, it responds well to fire and can flourish after a veld fire.

POLLINATION

This pink to lilac beauty attracts long-tongued bees, which are drawn to its sweet fragrance. As they visit the flowers in search of nectar, they help pollinate the plant.

CONSERVATION STATUS: Least Concern.
