Mimetes cucullates

Information

Common mimetes, common pagoda, red mimetes, red pagoda ( Eng. ); rooistompie, stompie (Afr.)

The striking Mimetes cucullates flowers from Spring to Autumn along our coastal drive, all the way up Rooiels Mountain and on Klein-Hangklip. We found these on the Rockjumper Route. (The smallholdings dirt road.)

The flowers are pollinated by sunbirds and sugarbirds. Ants carry the seeds off to their underground nests where the elaiosomes are eaten off. The seeds remain underground where it remains viable for many years, waiting for a veldfire and rain.

Apart from being reseeders, the plants are also resprouters and will resprout strongly after a fire, or after being pruned. Also called Red pagoda. Afr Rooi stompie.
